Kearsley Airways Ltd, the independent aircraft component specialists at Stanstead Airport, have placed orders for bespoke wound products from Rotastat recently for SEPCAT Jaguar and HS 748 airframes.

Substantial numbers of older aircraft are still in service and some components are getting increasingly difficult to locate. Short-run batches built to the same high standards, or better, than the originals are becoming the only option to keep these airframes operational.

Kearsley Airways started life as a charter operator in 1947, servicing many countries in Africa and the Far East. After taking part in the Berlin Airlift of 1948 the company decided to set up a maintenance division to service their aircraft and other carriers. Business increased quickly and soon it was decided to concentrate on maintenance and sell-off the company’s fleet of Dakotas.

Kearsley Airways operated a fleet of DC3 Dakotas before moving into the aircraft components market.
Today their work encompasses many aircraft on both military and civil platforms, including the C130 Hercules.

The company now operates from a 45,000 sq ft facility providing OEM parts to a diverse client base, offering full machine shop facilities for the manufacture of bespoke components. Increasing demand for discontinued items has meant working with Rotastat on products that require specialist precision windings has increased.

The company has more than one priority when ordering. Quality is an essential requirement for the products due to increasingly stringent tests and tightening of standards for older aircraft. The company appreciates Rotastat’s approach, which allows both teams to work closely together, enabling real-time checking and any modifications required to happen efficiently during the production process.

Rotastat’s policy of not just understanding a component’s design, but its requirement in its working environment has been a contributing factor in this strong relationship. Their in-depth knowledge of the technicians allows for continual improvement and can highlight any potential issues which may have consequences during the component’s operational life.

Despite the design being over 60 years old the HS 748 is still operational with a number of operators around the world.

Kearsley’s team have been appreciative of Rotastat’s can-do attitude, working together to find solutions quickly whilst keeping things cost-effective. The nature of the aerospace industry is one of constant improvement and high demands, and Kearsley’s clients are not immune from making additional requests and alterations whilst components are in already in production.

Reliability of service is a factor in this but Rotastat has always found a way to supply what is required within the specified time-frame despite all the hurdles. Providing regular updates on progress and reliable on-time delivery of products, even in the tightest of time-frames has made a partnership that continues to strengthen every year.
