Bowman Power Group Ltd, a client of Rotastat since 2004, has invested heavily in their Electric Turbo Compounding (ETC) technology which allows engine and generator sets (gensets) to become more efficient whilst also reducing carbon emissions.

Established in 2003, the company worked with engine producers including Volvo, Fiat, John Deere and Daimler on high-speed electrical machines. This development work led to the ETC technology which forms the core of their work today.

Based in Southampton, the company now exports to 20 countries, employs over 60 people and supplies products to fit Cummins, Wärtsilä, Jenbacher and CAT gensets amongst many others.

The efficiency benefits of their products have become renowned throughout the world and Rotastat is pleased to have been part of their development journey from the beginning.

Bowman’s ETC 100 is suited to gas and diesel-fuelled open and containerised gensets in the 600kW-1100kW range as a single system and 1100kW-2000kW gensets as a twin system.

Recovering waste energy from the exhaust gasses through a turbo generator, the equipment has enabled operators specifying new containerised and open gensets to take advantage of increased efficiency of up to 7%; a substantial amount considering many of the applications of this type of plant.

By reducing greenhouse gases by up to 23% the resulting power plant can more easily meet stringent new environmental targets whilst achieving payback in as quickly as 12 months. Alternatively, systems can benefit from a 10% increase in power output for the same amount of fuel.

After the installation of Bowman’s ETC 600s, this Cummins KTA50-G8 multiple open genset (running on biofuel) reduced consumption by 7%, resulting in an annual cost saving of €230K.

With the ease of retrofit installation and a compact size, the ETC system has rapidly gained market share with operators who are looking to upgrade existing plants to a higher output or meet new standards, without replacing their entire genset.

Rotastat has been involved in the electricity generator products used in Bowman’s ETC systems. Where high-quality and reliability are crucial factors, we have delivered components that are both stable and dependable to ensure that down-time is kept to an absolute minimum.

With even more demanding eco-legislation and cost-saving requirements on the horizon, the demand for more fuel-efficient generation systems is on the increase. Rotastat is pleased to have been involved with this success story from the start and looks forward to a healthy future going forwards.
